Scrabble Sunday Is Happening

Yes indeed, it really is! And on several fronts too...

1. On Sunday 13th March we return to Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, but this time with a special Springtime Showdown.
If you manage to get any of these words down onto your board you will receive an appropriately themed gift. If you get a few of these words then we'll arrange for you to hold hands with a celebrity of your choosing (think carefully, you wouldn't want to rush in and the next thing you know be canoodling Lenny Henry. Unless you'd really like to do that. Then by all means...canoodle away)
The magic words are:-
PANCAKE
DUTCH
CANOODLE
SPROUT
PUDDLE
CROCI (I love this word)

We will be there with excessive boards, biscuits and enthusiasm.

2. Our London friends, the cleverly named Scrabble Sunday London, our doing their 'thang' (that's what they're all saying in London..thang instead of thing) at The Lexington pub on Pentonville Road between King's Cross and Angel on Sunday 20th March. It's starts at 3pm and lasts well into the wordy night.

3. Once again, Scrabble Sunday will be doing our THANG at the London Word Festival (http://www.londonwordfestival.com/). But this time...IT'S SERIOUS. Yes, after the massive success of the Stuart Murdoch-approved Belle & Sebastian Bowlie Weekender Scrabble Sunday tournament at ATP (snappy title, huh) last year, we're doing it again. The big Scrabble-off takes place at the Pembury Tavern, Hackney on Sunday 17th April. We really need you to email us with your interest in taking part first so we can be super organised. Email us at scrabblesunday@gmail.com. More details are here - http://www.londonwordfestival.com/index.php/2011/02/scrabble-sunday-2/

Scrabble Sunday Gets SERIOUS @ ATP Bowlie 2

Scrabble Sunday are shaking. We’re shaking like a bowl of soup. Why? Because we’re going to Belle & Sebastian’s Bowlie 2 - http://www.atpfestival.com/events/bowlie2.php, at the request of none other than Stuart Murdoch. Yes, him out of Belle & Sebastian. He actually called up and demanded our presence, in the only way that the leader of the best indie-pop band ever invented could.

Now, what you need to know is that this is no normal Scrabble Sunday where we fart about playing nicey nice. Oh no, this is SERIOUS. It’s a tournament. We’ll be playing proper rules tournament Scrabble with clocks, holding bags above heads and no laughing at playing the word ‘tit’. We’re going to have 6 rounds, which will eventually lead to a winner, who will win something genuinely trouser-shaking. And of course, the winner of the best word will win something fancy too.

Here are the details, Scrabblers.

Where: The Crazy Horse

When: First 3 rounds, Saturday 10am - 2pm, Final 3 rounds, Sunday 10am - 2pm

If you want to play, email us right away on atpscrabble@gmail.com

Laughter, Scrabble and Top Tunes

The rumours are true. This weekend we're off to the wonderful Lynton & Lynmouth Comedy Festival. Here are some reasons why you, too, should come:

1. The town(s) has a funicular railway (see wonderful pictures below)
2. There is a 700ft gorge there
3. Gainsborough honeymooned there
4. There was a flood there in 1952. Lovers of flood history won't want to miss this one.
5. There's a whole weekend of comedy and loads of other brilliant sounding stuff happening all over the place and it costs you absolutely ZILCH. Zero, nada, nothing, bog all. IT'S FREE. Have a look here if you don't believe me - http://www.lyntoncomedyfestival.co.uk/
6. We are going to be there. Now, I'm going to need sub-sections for what we have planned.
6.1. We have musical acts plucked from a drawer so high, even 6ft 4in high jump champion Blanka Vlasic would struggle to reach it. In no particular order, they are:
6.1.1. The unspeakably lovely, home-spun, acoustic melodrama of Evening Chorus - http://www.myspace.com/eveningchorus
6.1.2. Rory McVicar, who actually made Rob Da Bank cry with his wonderfully downbeat tunes -
6.1.3. Gavin Osborn, a man capable of making you both laugh and go 'aaaah' using his only weapon - Acoustic Singing Songs -
6.1.4. Superstar DJ turns from The Bull, MC Cheeseballs and LEREGO, playing all manner of Schmindy indie, bop pop and rock 'n' roll splendour

Oh yeah...

7. We will be there with our Scrabble boards (other board games for lesser souls will be made available), our biscuits, maybe cakes and plentiful tea.

We can't wait for this one (we're big fans of flood history, see).

Scrabble Sunday Extravaganza: Coming Up

Hello!

It's been many moons since we last wrote you a message, so we do hope you're keeping well and warm.

We have THREE Scrabble Sundays coming up in the next TWO Sundays. Impossible you cry! No it's fine. It's happening. See? All free. All involving bourbons.

10th October @ Chapter Arts Centre
http://www.chapter.org/
6pm - 10pm
- Our regular monthly night. (Most recent addition to games arsenal - TRUMP the boardgame. Genuinely good)

17th October @ Lynton and Lynmouth Comedy Festival, Bath Hotel Lynmouth
http://www.lyntoncomedyfestival.co.uk/lineup
2pm - 6pm
- To accompany the Scrabbling we have excellent acoustic music from Evening Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/eveningchorus), Rory McVicar (http://www.myspace.com/rorymcvicar) and Gavin Osborn (http://www.myspace.com/gavinosborn) as well as (super hot) DJs to make you tap your tiles while you play. This is a comedy festival where every single thing is free. Pretty amazing.

ALSO and this is the biggie - it's right next to this funicular railway http://www.cliffrailwaylynton.co.uk/ I've been on it. It was incredible. It's no accident that the word FUN is in FUNicular*.

17th October @ Newport Comedy Festival in an EMPTY SHOP (old Meeks), Upper Dock Street
http://on.fb.me/9ObpnC
12pm - 4pm
- It's in an old shop filled with curiosities and board games and music. And there is some very good comedy to see afterwards (see Nick Helm).

So. There we are. We are splitting ourselves in half to make Scrabble Sunday happen in two different countries. We're committed to the cause. Now do come along. It's likely that making two is going to be the best anyone can do. But if you make it to all three you win a horse.

We're also on Twitter if you're so inclined @scrabblesunday

For making it to the end of this message you get to see this youtube video - first introduced to me by Leah 'THE DON' Roberts and I've since watched it 600,000 times:

*It probably is an accident. But I bet the inventors were pretty chuffed once they noticed.

We're Going To Latitude!

Latitudefestival2010

Yes, that's right. We're packing up our boards, our gazebo and our wellies and we're heading for Suffolk. You got it. We're on our way to Latitude Festival 2010. Apart from Scrabble Sunday we're mostly excited about Belle & Sebastian, Wild Beasts, Daniel Kitson, Sweet Baboo, Y Niwl, Richard Herring, agh, there's just TOO MUCH. Anyway, we will be doing our Scrabble Sunday thing at Pandora's Playground on the Sunday between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. See you there!

Scrabble Sunday Goes To The Festivals

Scrabble Sunday @ Machynlleth Comedy Festival, Sunday 25th April 2010

Well, wasn't that a wonderful time? The sun shone and the people laughed, but most importantly they made words from tiles picked randomly from a bag. They.....played.....Scrabble. I know. It's true. Look at them in these pictures we took. Look at them and see what a brilliant time they were having. It was really ace. Can't wait for next year.
